The History They Reduced to “Africans Sold Africans”
Whenever the transatlantic slave trade is discussed, someone eventually declares, “Africans sold their own people.”
The statement contains a fragment of truth—but it is often used to conceal a much larger crime.
Africa was not a single country or one united people. It was—and remains—a vast continent of kingdoms, nations, ethnic groups, languages, and rival political powers. Most people living in the 1500s did not identify themselves simply as “Africans,” just as Europeans did not regard every other European as one of their own.
Slavery and systems of forced labor existed in parts of Africa before Europeans arrived, as they existed in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. Prisoners of war, debtors, criminals, and captives could be enslaved. Conditions varied greatly. In some African societies, enslaved people could marry, own property, become members of a household, gain freedom, or rise to influential positions.
These systems could be brutal, and they should not be romanticized. But they were not identical to the racialized, hereditary chattel slavery constructed across the Atlantic world.
European colonization of the Americas created an enormous demand for forced labor. Portugal, Britain, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, and other European powers developed commercial networks that transformed human captivity into an international industry.
European merchants financed voyages, built and operated slave ships, established coastal forts, supplied weapons and manufactured goods, insured human cargo, and transported captives across the Atlantic. Colonial governments wrote laws declaring Africans and their descendants permanent property. Plantation owners then exploited their labor to produce sugar, cotton, tobacco, coffee, rice, and other commodities.
Yes, some African rulers, merchants, and military leaders participated. Some sold prisoners captured in wars. Others conducted raids or kidnapped vulnerable people to meet foreign demand. Certain states gained wealth and weapons through the trade while neighboring communities were devastated.
That participation must be acknowledged honestly.
But saying “Africans sold Africans” as though the entire continent willingly sold itself is historically dishonest. It erases the millions of Africans who were captured, the communities that resisted, the rulers who rejected the trade, and the people who fought slave raiders and foreign traffickers.
It also ignores the unequal machinery behind the system.
Europeans did not usually conquer the African interior during the early centuries of the trade. Instead, they exploited existing conflicts, encouraged warfare, traded firearms for captives, and created a market so profitable that human kidnapping spread across entire regions. Demand from plantations in the Americas turned older forms of servitude into a massive system of commercial deportation.
More than 10 million captive Africans survived transportation to the Americas, while countless others died during raids, forced marches, imprisonment along the coast, and the Middle Passage. Families disappeared. Communities were emptied. Political instability intensified, and generations of human knowledge and potential were stolen from the continent. The Library of Congress describes how European colonial demand expanded the trade and profoundly disrupted West and Central African societies.
The deepest distinction was what happened after the captives reached the Americas.
European colonial societies constructed slavery around race. An African could be bought, sold, mortgaged, inherited, beaten, sexually exploited, and worked to death. In many colonies, the child of an enslaved woman inherited her status. Enslavement was no longer merely a consequence of war or debt it became a permanent condition assigned to Black people and passed from one generation to the next.
To justify this system, Europeans developed false theories of African inferiority and white supremacy. Racism did not simply produce Atlantic slavery; Atlantic slavery also helped construct and institutionalize modern racism. Yet African history is not merely a history of captivity.
Africans resisted at every stage. They defended their communities, escaped from coastal prisons, revolted aboard ships, sabotaged plantations, formed maroon settlements, preserved African spirituality and culture, and fought for freedom across the Americas. The Haitian Revolution proved that enslaved Black people could defeat European armies and destroy a slave regime.
The truth requires holding every guilty party accountable: African collaborators, European merchants, colonial governments, shipowners, insurers, bankers, and plantation families who built wealth from human suffering.

But responsibility must be measured according to power, scale, control, and profit.
African participation does not erase European authorship of the Atlantic commercial system. It does not excuse the governments that legalized hereditary racial bondage. And it does not transfer responsibility from the people who created, expanded, protected, and profited from one of history’s greatest crimes onto its victims.
The Taken Ones were not born slaves.
They were farmers, soldiers, metalworkers, merchants, scholars, spiritual leaders, mothers, fathers, and children. They came from societies with histories stretching back thousands of years.
They were not cargo.
They were human beings who were captured, trafficked, and forced into a system designed to steal their labor, identity, freedom, and descendants.
That is the shocking truth behind African slavery and the truth must never be reduced to a sentence meant to excuse the people who built the ships, controlled the colonies, wrote the laws, and collected the wealth.
We are the Descendants of the Taken Ones but we are also the descendants of those who resisted, survived, and remembered.

Discover the hidden history of Black Germans persecuted under the Nazi regime—a chapter largely erased from the traditional histories of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Germany was already home to a small but established Black community. They were German citizens, including students, musicians, actors, sailors, workers, activists, and children. Some descended from Africans who had arrived from Germany’s former colonies; others were children of African soldiers and German women after World War I.
Some accounts estimate that between 20,000 and 25,000 Black and mixed-race people may have lived in Germany during this period. However, historians have not confirmed an exact number. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum cautiously describes the population in 1933 as “several thousand.” Therefore, the figure of 25,000 should be presented as a high historical estimate—not an established count.
Declared Enemies of the “Aryan Race” Nazi ideology classified Black people as racially inferior and excluded them from Hitler’s vision of a so-called pure Aryan nation. Beginning in 1933, Black Germans lost jobs, educational opportunities, legal protections, and the ability to participate freely in German society. The Nuremberg Race Laws were created primarily to persecute Jewish people, but by the end of 1935, parts of those laws were also applied to Black people and Roma. Black Germans could be denied citizenship rights and prohibited from marrying or having relationships with white Germans. Black children were humiliated during racial-science lessons, expelled from schools, denied apprenticeships, and excluded from Nazi youth organizations. In March 1941, Black children were formally barred from attending German public schools. The Secret Sterilization Campaign. Among the most horrifying Nazi crimes was the secret sterilization of mixed-race children born in Germany’s Rhineland. Many were children of German women and African soldiers who had served in the French occupation forces after World War I. The Nazis labeled these children with the degrading term “Rhineland Bastards.” Hitler described their existence as a racial contamination of Germany. By the end of 1937, Nazi officials and doctors had forcibly sterilized at least 385 Black and mixed-race children and teenagers—often without legal authority. Families were threatened or pressured into signing consent forms. The objective was unmistakable: to prevent another generation of Black Germans from being born. Imprisonment and Murder Unlike the Jewish population, Black Germans were not subjected to a single, centralized program of mass deportation and extermination. That distinction must be clearly recognized. But it does not mean they escaped Nazi persecution. Black people were arrested and confined in prisons, workhouses, psychiatric institutions, forced-labor sites, and concentration camps. Some were subjected to medical abuse, while others were murdered. Among the documented victims were: Hilarius “Lari” Gilges, a Black German performer and Communist activist, was murdered by Nazis in Düsseldorf in 1933. Mahjub bin Adam Mohamed, also known as Bayume Mohamed Husen, was imprisoned and murdered at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Martha Ndumbe, a Black German woman, was imprisoned and murdered at Ravensbrück. Ferdinand Allen was forcibly sterilized in 1935 and murdered in 1941 through the Nazi T4 killing program. Gert Schramm was imprisoned at Buchenwald at age 15 and survived. Other Black Germans disappeared into prisons and camps without leaving records. Because identifying them as Black, the full number of victims may never be known. A Community Nearly Erased. The Black German experience under Nazism was not a single story. Some survived by hiding. Some found limited employment as performers in colonial propaganda films. Others relied on white relatives and friends willing to protect them. Many lived every day knowing that a neighbor, teacher, employer, or police officer could expose them. By the end of the Nazi regime, Germany’s developing Black community had been devastated. Families had been separated, careers destroyed, children denied education, and countless people driven into exile, imprisonment, silence, or death. Their history was then overshadowed and neglected for decades. The persecution of Black Germans does not replace or diminish the history of the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust. It expands our understanding of the reach of Nazi racial ideology—and restores Black victims and survivors to a history from which they were too often excluded.
They were descendants of the Taken Ones—recovering the history they tried to erase. They were Germans. They were Black. They were targeted—and their stories deserve to be remembered

This history is disturbing—but it must be told accurately.
During slavery and the decades following emancipation, Black Americans were not only exploited while alive. In certain documented and reported cases, their bodies were desecrated after death. Their remains were taken for medical dissection, displayed as specimens, kept as souvenirs, and allegedly used to produce objects made from human skin. One of the most frequently cited accounts appeared in the Philadelphia News and was reprinted on March 17, 1888, under the headline "Leather From Human Skin."
The report described a prominent Philadelphia physician who allegedly wore shoes made from the skin of deceased Black people. According to the article, the physician claimed that human skin produced exceptionally durable and flexible leather. The report further alleged that skin obtained from medical dissection rooms had been sent to a tannery and made into shoes and other personal items.
This report appeared 23 years after the abolition of slavery. Therefore, it should not be described simply as a plantation practice. It belongs to the broader history of racial dehumanization that began under slavery and continued through the medical exploitation, grave robbing, lynching, and racial terror of the Jim Crow era. Medical schools created a particularly horrifying environment for this abuse. During the nineteenth century, medical institutions needed bodies for anatomical study. Because legally available cadavers were limited, grave robbers—sometimes called "resurrectionists"—stole bodies from cemeteries. Black burial grounds and the graves of poor people were frequently targeted because those responsible assumed their families lacked the political power to resist.
Black bodies could consequently be treated as medical property without consent. After dissection, organs, bones, skin, and other remains were not always buried respectfully. Some were preserved as teaching specimens, while written accounts indicate that human skin was occasionally fashioned into items such as wallets, purses, book coverings, slippers, or shoes. The 1888 newspaper story is historical evidence that people openly discussed and reported this practice. However, it is not the same as modern forensic verification. No large collection of scientifically authenticated clothing made from the skin of enslaved Black people has been discovered. The facts support a careful conclusion: There is credible historical evidence that the skin of deceased Black people was occasionally used to create shoes and other objects. However, there is no evidence that this was a widespread industry or a routine method of producing clothing during slavery.
The distinction matters. Repeating the story without qualification can transform a horrifying but apparently rare practice into an unsupported claim about mass production. Rejecting the entire account as an urban legend, however, ignores the documented history of medical abuse and the extreme desecration of Black bodies. The most important truth is larger than any single pair of shoes. American slavery reduced human beings to property. That belief did not disappear when slavery legally ended in 1865. It survived in medical institutions, segregated hospitals, stolen graves, racial experimentation, public lynchings, and the collection of Black body parts as trophies. From the reported treatment of Nat Turner's remains to the grave robbing of Black cemeteries and the unauthorized use of Black patients in medical research, the same message was repeated: Black people supposedly possessed no final authority over their own bodies—not even after death.
Yet these people were not objects, specimens, trophies, or raw material. They were human beings. They had names, families, communities, beliefs, and descendants. Their bodies deserved the same dignity in death that was denied to them in life. We remember this history not to sensationalize Black suffering, but to confront the full depth of the system that produced it. Historical truth requires us to distinguish what is verified, what was reported, and what remains uncertain—while refusing to minimize the cruelty that the surviving evidence reveals. Their bodies were exploited. Their dignity was violated. But their humanity can never be erased. The Warrior Who Made Freedom His Kingdom Zumbi dos Palmares Before Brazil abolished slavery and before freedom was written into law, Africans and their descendants were already building freedom with their own hands. High in the forested mountains of northeastern Brazil stood Palmares the greatest and longest-lasting quilombo in Brazilian history. A quilombo was a community established primarily by Africans who had escaped enslavement, but Palmares became far more than a hiding place. It evolved into a federation of fortified settlements where thousands cultivated crops, raised families, traded with neighboring communities, and defended their independence.
At the heart of its final resistance stood Zumbi dos Palmares. Zumbi was born around 1655 in the region now part of the Brazilian state of Alagoas. Traditional accounts say he was captured as a child, given to a Catholic priest, and baptized Francisco. He learned Portuguese and Latin before escaping in his youth and returning to Palmares. Because documentation of his early life is limited, some details remain uncertain. What is not uncertain is the power Palmares represented. Portuguese colonists relied on enslaved African labor to generate enormous wealth from Brazil’s plantations. Every escape threatened that system. Every successful quilombo proved that Africans were neither naturally enslaved nor incapable of governing themselves. Palmares survived repeated attacks by Dutch and Portuguese forces because its people knew the mountains, forests, and defensive terrain. Its inhabitants built political, military, and economic networks that sustained their communities for generations. Palmares was not merely resisting slavery—it was demonstrating an alternative to it. In 1678, colonial authorities offered a peace agreement to Ganga Zumba, one of Palmares’ most important leaders. The agreement promised freedom to certain residents who relocated and submitted to Portuguese authority. However, it did not guarantee freedom for everyone, particularly Africans who had escaped slavery after the agreement. Zumbi rejected the arrangement. He understood that freedom granted only to some—while others remained chained—was not true freedom. He emerged as a leading military commander and the most prominent leader of Palmares’ ongoing resistance. For years, Zumbi and the Palmarinos fought against heavily armed expeditions sent to destroy them. They defended their homes against soldiers, mercenaries, and slaveholders determined to return Black people to captivity.
In 1694, a massive colonial assault equipped with artillery broke through the defenses of Macaco, Palmares’ political center. The settlement fell, but Zumbi escaped and continued resisting. The Portuguese authorities knew that destroying buildings would not be enough. As long as Zumbi lived, the idea of Palmares lived with him. After being betrayed and located by colonial forces, Zumbi was killed on November 20, 1695. His body was mutilated, and his head was taken to Recife and publicly displayed. Colonial officials sought to prove that Zumbi was mortal and to frighten other Africans away from rebellion. Instead, they created a martyr. Palmares did not disappear immediately after Zumbi’s death. Smaller communities and resistance groups continued fighting into the eighteenth century. More importantly, its example survived wherever enslaved people fled, rebelled, and built communities beyond the reach of their captors. Brazil did not legally abolish slavery until May 13, 1888—nearly two centuries after Zumbi’s death. Today, many Afro-Brazilians commemorate November 20 instead because it honors Black people as the creators of their own liberation, rather than portraying freedom as something handed down by the monarchy. November 20 is now observed throughout Brazil as the National Day of Zumbi and Black Consciousness. It became a nationwide public holiday in 2024. Zumbi was not a man waiting for someone else to recognize his humanity. He belonged to a people who planted crops, built settlements, organized defenses, and governed themselves on land the colonial system claimed as property. His enemies displayed his head to declare that resistance had ended. More than three centuries later, Brazil speaks his name. Zumbi dos Palmares did not ask the slaveholding world for freedom. He defended a Black nation that had already claimed it.
