CORETTI HARDY THE BLACK AMERICAN VOICE THAT FOUND A STAGE IN RUSSIA
Before Paul Robeson became internationally associated with Black American music in the Soviet Union, another African American performer had already built an extraordinary life and career there. Born Corette Elizabeth Hardy on December 5, 1881, in Churchville, New York, she later became known professionally as Coretti Arle-Titz. She was a singer, actress, dancer, and recording artist, and one of the earliest Black American performers to establish a lasting career in Russia.
Coretti was born to Carrie Carter and Thomas Hardy. Her family eventually settled in New York City, where opportunities for Black women were severely restricted by racism and segregation. As a young woman, she worked as a copyist and sang in a church choir. Her life changed when she joined African American entertainers traveling to Europe. By the early 1900s, Coretti had traveled through Europe and into the Russian Empire. What began as a theatrical journey became an entirely new life.
While other performers returned home or moved elsewhere, Coretti remained in Russia. She learned the language, adapted to Russian musical traditions, and built a repertoire that encompassed Russian romances, classical works, popular songs, jazz, and African American spirituals.
Her dramatic soprano voice earned recognition. Russian audiences heard Black spirituals through Coretti decades before these songs were widely recognized as foundations of American music. Imagine the scene: an African American woman from New York walking onto a stage in Imperial Russia to sing Russian music for Russian audiences.
Coretti refused to remain a curiosity. She earned serious musical credentials and built a career that spanned the final years of Imperial Russia, World War I, the Russian Revolution, the Civil War, the creation of the Soviet Union, Stalin’s rule, and World War II. In 1924, Coretti appeared at Moscow’s legendary Bolshoi Theatre. Her program featured classical selections alongside Negro spirituals.
A Black woman born in nineteenth-century America had traveled thousands of miles beyond the racial barriers of the United States and was now performing African American sacred music in one of the world’s most prestigious cultural institutions.
The spirituals carried the suffering, faith, resistance, endurance, and hope of generations of Black people. Coretti helped carry those voices across another continent.
During the early 1930s, Coretti became the first known African American-born musician to record music in the Soviet Union. Among the spirituals she recorded were “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” and “Little David Play on Your Harp.”
These recordings placed the African American spiritual within Soviet recorded culture. The voice of a woman born only sixteen years after the end of American slavery was being preserved thousands of miles away in Moscow.
Coretti belonged to a small but remarkable community of African Americans who lived, worked, performed, or traveled through the Soviet Union.
In 1932, she helped welcome a group of Black American artists and intellectuals who arrived in Moscow for a proposed film about American racism. The delegation included Langston Hughes. Paul Robeson later became one of the most famous Black Americans associated with the Soviet Union. But Coretti had already performed there for decades.
There were pioneers before the famous names. Coretti Hardy was one of them.
Coretti performed more than spirituals. She interpreted music associated with several peoples of the Soviet Union. In 1933, she performed in Yerevan, Armenia, where her treatment of Armenian folk music received favorable attention.
She carried Black American music into Russia while also absorbing the music of the cultures around her. She became something rare: a transnational Black artist.
Coretti remained in the Soviet Union during World War II and continued her artistic work despite the catastrophic destruction caused by Nazi Germany’s invasion. She later received the Soviet Medal “For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945.”
A Black woman born in nineteenth-century New York survived two world wars, a revolution, and two Russian political systems. Coretti died in Moscow on December 14, 1951, after spending most of her adult life thousands of miles from the United States.
Coretti Hardy’s story is part of the larger history of the African diaspora. Some descendants of enslaved Africans crossed oceans to build lives in societies that barely understood their origins. Some carried African American culture to places where Black voices were rarely heard.
Coretti Hardy was one of those people. She performed on stages in Imperial Russia. She survived the revolution. She sang at the Bolshoi. She recorded Black spirituals in the Soviet Union. She endured political upheaval and world war. She built a career that lasted decades.
Coretti Hardy did not simply leave America. She carried the voice of Black America with her. Wherever that voice traveled, a piece of our history traveled with it.

Fidel Castro: The Revolution That Took Privilege Away
To understand why Fidel Castro remains deeply hated by many wealthy, predominantly light-skinned Cuban exile families, we must understand what Cuba looked like before the 1959 Revolution. Before Castro, Cuba was governed by the U.S.-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Wealth, land, political influence, private schools, exclusive beaches, social clubs, and economic opportunity were concentrated among Cuba’s upper classes. Because of Cuba’s long history of slavery and racial discrimination, those privileged circles were excessively white and light-skinned. Black and poor Cubans were often excluded from the best schools, neighborhoods, professions, beaches, hotels, and social organizations. Castro’s revolution attacked that unequal order. The revolutionary government desegregated beaches and public facilities, challenged discrimination in employment and education, abolished exclusive private clubs, redistributed land, nationalized major businesses, and expanded public services to neglected rural and Black communities. A nationwide literacy campaign sent teachers across the island, making education widely accessible. Medical care was treated as a public right rather than something reserved for those who could afford it. Many poor Cubans gained opportunities that had previously been blocked by class, geography, and color. Cuba also emerged as a major international opponent of colonialism and apartheid. Cuban doctors, teachers, and soldiers served across Africa. Cuban forces fought in Angola, where their intervention helped weaken South Africa’s apartheid government and contributed to the conditions that led to Namibia’s independence. These accomplishments help explain why Castro became a symbol of resistance throughout Africa, Latin America, and much of the developing world. This created powerful enemies. Members of Cuba’s wealthy and professional classes lost plantations, businesses, rental properties, political influence, domestic servants, and exclusive access to private institutions. The first large wave of Cubans to leave after the revolution was disproportionately affluent and white. Many settled in Florida, where their memories, political impact, and opposition to Castro became deeply rooted across generations.
Castro did not merely change the government; he dismantled the social order that had placed their families near the top. However, it would be inaccurate to say that all light-skinned Cubans hate Castro or that everyone who left Cuba was defending racial privilege. Many Cubans opposed him because his government became authoritarian. It suppressed independent journalism, restricted political competition, imprisoned dissidents, seized property without adequate compensation, limited religious and civil freedoms, and punished those who challenged the Communist Party. Black Cubans, working-class Cubans, artists, religious believers, and former revolutionaries were also among those persecuted or driven into exile. The full truth is therefore more complicated than either side often admits. Fidel Castro’s government expanded literacy, education, healthcare, and opportunity while dismantling institutions that had protected racial and economic privilege. It also built a one-party state that denied Cubans fundamental political freedoms and insisted that racism had been solved, even as racial inequality persisted beneath the surface. That is why Castro’s legacy remains so fiercely contested.
To many poor, Black, and previously excluded Cubans, the revolution opened doors that old Cuba had kept locked. To many formerly powerful families, it meant the loss of wealth, property, status, and control. To political prisoners and silenced citizens, it became another form of oppression. The lesson is not that every light-skinned Cuban hated Castro because of race. The deeper lesson is that equality can feel like oppression to those who once benefited from inequality—and when a revolution redistributes power, those who lose privilege often tell a very different story than those who finally gain access. The historical distinction matters: early Cuban exiles were disproportionately affluent, yet skin color alone does not explain opposition to Castro. Sources supporting the narrative include the Library of Congress, University of Chicago scholarship on post-revolutionary race, Boston University’s analysis of Cuban migration, and Amnesty International’s.

Clara Brown entered the world around 1800 in Virginia, born into a system that legally treated Black men, women, and children as property. She would eventually become one of the most remarkable pioneers of the American West—a successful entrepreneur, property owner, philanthropist, and community builder known throughout Colorado as “Aunt Clara.”
Clara and her mother were taken to Kentucky as children. She later married an enslaved man named Richard and became the mother of four children. Although slavery denied their legal independence, they created a family within the limited space the institution allowed them.
Then, around 1835, the man who enslaved the family died.
His property was sold. That “property” included human beings.
Clara, her husband, and their children were separated and sold to different enslavers. In a matter of hours, the auction block destroyed the family they had spent years building. Clara would spend much of the rest of her life searching for the children slavery had taken from her. She remained enslaved for more than two additional decades. Eventually, after the death of her final enslaver, Clara gained her freedom in the late 1850s. She was nearly sixty years old. For many people, that might have been the beginning of retirement. For Clara Brown, it became the beginning of an entirely new life. In 1859, thousands of fortune seekers were heading west during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. Clara found work as a cook on a wagon train traveling toward Colorado. Imagine the transformation.
A woman who had spent most of her life being told where she could live and work was now crossing the Great Plains as a free woman.
She eventually reached Central City, Colorado, one of the booming mining communities created by the gold rush.
Clara understood something important: miners searching for gold still needed food, clothing, laundry, housing, and services.
She established a laundry business.
It prospered. She saved her earnings and began investing in property, mining interests, and other opportunities. Within only a few years, the formerly enslaved woman had accumulated substantial wealth. But money never became the purpose of her life. Her generosity became legendary.
People called her “Aunt Clara” because her home became a place where they could find food, shelter, nursing care, advice, and assistance. She helped people regardless of whether they could repay her. When formerly enslaved Black Americans began seeking new opportunities after the Civil War, Clara used her resources to help some relocate to the West. Clara had built something for herself. Now she wanted others to build something too. Yet beneath all her success remained a wound money could never repair.
She still wanted her children.
For decades, Clara traveled and wrote letters seeking information about the family members who had been sold away from her. She returned east after emancipation hoping to locate them.
Some had disappeared into the enormous human tragedy created by slavery.
But Clara refused to stop searching. Nearly half a century after she had been separated from her children, extraordinary news finally reached her. Her daughter Eliza Jane was alive. She was living in Iowa. Clara was now elderly and no longer possessed the fortune she once controlled. Years of generosity, economic setbacks, and helping other people had reduced much of her wealth. None of that mattered.
She traveled to find her daughter. After approximately forty-seven years, mother and daughter were reunited. Think about what that moment represented. Slavery had separated them when Eliza Jane was young. When they saw each other again, both were free women. The institution that had attempted to permanently destroy their family had failed to keep them apart forever. Clara returned to Colorado with her daughter and granddaughter. By then, she had become one of the best-known Black pioneers in the state. In 1885, she was admitted to the Society of Colorado Pioneers, recognition of the role she had played in Colorado’s early development.
That honor carried extraordinary meaning.
The woman who once could not legally own herself was being recognized as one of the people who helped build a state. Clara Brown died in Denver on October 23, 1885.
Her story represents one of the most extraordinary reversals in American history.
She was born property. She became a property owner. Her labor once created wealth for enslavers. She became an entrepreneur whose labor created wealth for herself.
Her family was torn apart. She helped other families build new homes. She had once been denied the right to determine where she lived. She crossed the country and created a new life in the Rocky Mountains. And when success finally came, she did not close the door behind her.
She opened it wider.
That is why Clara Brown deserves to be remembered as more than a successful businesswoman. She understood that economic independence could become a weapon against the legacy of slavery. She transformed money into opportunity.
Property into security. Her greatest achievement was not how much wealth she accumulated.
It was how many lives she touched with it. Slavery took her family. Freedom gave her the power to search. Hard work gave her independence. Business gave her resources.
And generosity turned those resources into a legacy. Clara “Aunt” Brown was a mother who never stopped searching, a pioneer who helped build Colorado, an entrepreneur who created wealth from almost nothing, and a philanthropist who understood that freedom becomes more powerful when it is shared.
