It’s oxymoronic to say you’re a hip hop head, love pure hip hop at its essence, or even a fan of rap as it was created and not know who Papoose is. His career literally died on the hill of letting you know that when it came to rapping and doing simply that, his name should be mentioned with the greats. In interviews whenever he’s asked about his place against top MCs in the game, he almost feel disrespected by the comparisons and also that the goal post is always moved so to speak when record sales vs who can actually spit rhymes are the topic. In the late 90s he was destined to be the next big rapper from New York, at least it’s what he thought, and yes he was this close to that happening. He’s most famously known for his connection to DJ Kay Slay, his mixtapes classics, especially with the street sweepers and always speaking his mind about injustice of all kinds in the majority of his songs. He had the look right for the times, the pedigree being from the Mecca of hip hop and a place some of the greatest MCs of all time were also from. And he was backed by a legendary hip hop figure in Kay Slay. So why didn’t he blow up in the rap game and see the success of other artist if you asked him couldn’t compete in that area with his studied skills.
