In the 1870s, freed Black families in South Carolina did something extraordinary. They bought land through the state’s Land Commission, raised cabins, built churches, planted fields, and founded a community they named Promised Land. More than 150 years later, their descendants still live on that soil.
This is their story — from survival to legacy.
