Born in Nigeria, 17-year-old Moroti Adegboyega is making waves with a brilliant idea: an AI-powered robot designed to find and collect plastic in water while recognizing and avoiding fish and other aquatic life.
His invention, Ecoferroquatics, combines cameras, artificial intelligence, robotics and magnetic technologyβincluding biodegradable ferrofluidβto target plastic debris. The project earned Moroti the 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize, bringing global recognition to a young innovator using technology to tackle pollution while keeping aquatic ecosystems in mind. The system is still a prototype, and more testing is needed in real-world waterways.
Morotiβs inventive approach offers an inspiring glimpse of how young minds can help solve big environmental challenges.
