In 2024, journalist Elaine Welteroth saw the urgent need for safer birth options and launched BirthFUND to expand access to midwifery care for families.

As of 2026, birthFUND has raised over $3 million in total funding to help reduce maternal mortality rates by supporting vetted midwives and providing grants to expecting parents. The fund connects families with trusted birth workers and covers costs that often fall through the cracks in traditional systems.

"We know the statistics, we know that they're grim," Welteroth said. "What we're here to do is really change the stats into a call to action."

Through this work, Welteroth continues to build solutions that strengthen communities and create better outcomes for Black mothers and their babies.
