Did you know a Black woman at NASA patented technology for transmitting a 3D image to a remote location?

In 1978, Dr. Valerie L. Thomas filed a patent for the Illusion Transmitter. The patent, granted in 1980, described a system that could capture an image, transmit it electronically, and reproduce a 3D illusion at another location using concave mirrors.

In simple terms: she developed a way to make an image appear three-dimensional somewhere else.

And this wasn't the only groundbreaking work she did at NASA. Dr. Thomas played an integral role in developing the computer systems that processed satellite images and showed how those images could be used to monitor crops around the world.

Think about how familiar technologies like 3D imaging, telepresence and remote visual communication are today. Dr. Thomas was decades ahead of her time.

Had you ever heard of Dr. Valerie L. Thomas before today?
