Did you know the yellow/caution phase of the modern three-way traffic signal traces back to a Black inventor?

Meet Garrett A. Morgan (1877–1963), an inventor and entrepreneur whose work focused heavily on public safety.
In 1923, Morgan patented an improved three-way traffic signal that added an intermediate caution position. His design stopped traffic in all directions before allowing traffic to proceed, helping clear intersections and reduce the risk of collisions. He later sold the patent rights to General Electric for $40,000.

But the traffic signal wasn't his only major invention.

In 1914, Morgan patented his safety hood, an early breathing device designed to provide cleaner air to people working in smoke- or gas-filled environments. In the 1916 Cleveland Waterworks tunnel disaster, Morgan and other rescuers used the device to reach the tunnel and rescue eight survivors.
