What do modern heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems have in common with a Black engineer from the early 20th century?
Meet David N. Crosthwait Jr. (1898β1976) β a pioneering engineer and inventor whose work helped advance the way large buildings were heated, ventilated and controlled.
Crosthwait developed innovative heating, ventilation, refrigeration, thermostat and vacuum systems, earning 39 U.S. patents and 80 international patents during his career.
One of his most notable achievements was designing the steam-heating system used to heat Radio City Music Hall at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
In 1929, he received U.S. Patent No. 1,727,965 for a vacuum steam-heating system designed to control steam at sub-atmospheric pressures.
His work helped make large-building climate-control systems more efficient and controllableβand his engineering influence extended far beyond a single building.
