Tis always the season for toys, and today we're spotlighting Washington, DC-based toy maker Kemi Tignor of @Upbounders. 🧸 Kemi turned a simple observation into a joyful mission: creating toys that celebrate diversity.
Founded in 2018, Upbounders emerged from her determination to fill toy boxes with more inclusive options. "I wanted there to be things in [my son’s] toy box that were inclusive of him and his wonderfully diverse gaggle of friends," says Tignor. "When you're going around and you can't find those things that showcase our life as well, those were lost opportunities for joy."
What began at local farmers' markets has grown into a multichannel national brand, thanks in part to Amazon's fulfillment and marketing tools. Since launching in the Amazon store in 2020, Upbounders has averaged 29% month-over-month sales growth. But Tignor's impact extends beyond business metrics.
During the pandemic, Upbounders donated portions of sales to support local businesses at risk of closing and continued providing toys to nonprofits and shelters—demonstrating how small businesses can drive both economic growth and community impact.
