DID YOU KNOW A BLACK INVENTOR HELPED CHANGE HOW BREAD WAS MADE? 🍞

Meet Joseph Lee, a Black chef, baker, and inventor whose innovations helped make commercial baking more efficient.

In the late 1800s, Lee developed machines that tackled two important jobs in the baking industry: kneading dough and turning bread into breadcrumbs.

1894 — THE DOUGH-KNEADING MACHINE

Lee received U.S. Patent No. 524,042 on August 7, 1894, for a machine that mechanically kneaded dough. This helped reduce the manual labor involved in preparing dough for bread production.

1895 — THE BREAD-CRUMBING MACHINE

On June 4, 1895, Lee received U.S. Patent No. 540,553 for a bread-crumbing machine. It made it easier for bakeries and restaurants to turn bread into crumbs for use in other food preparations, helping put leftover bread to use instead of wasting it.

Joseph Lee's contributions earned him a place in the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2019.
