Boko is a Harvard-trained lawyer who won a historic election in October 2024, ending nearly 60 years of one-party rule. Botswana is the world's second-largest diamond producer, and its minerals are increasingly valuable in global supply chains. Boko has made it clear that negotiations about his country's wealth should happen on home soil.

The statement reportedly went viral across African social media, with politicians and commentators praising it as a shift in how African leaders engage with global powers. Official confirmation from either government has not been issued."
