🇪🇹 Ethiopia has opened its first National Precious Metals Refinery, aiming to process gold locally and keep more of the value from its mineral resources within the country.

According to a report shared by Africa Fact Zone, the facility is designed to process up to 600 tonnes of precious metals annually. Local refining could help reduce reliance on foreign facilities while supporting export earnings, creating jobs and strengthening Ethiopia’s mining industry.

The project reflects a broader effort across Africa to process more of the continent’s mineral wealth before it reaches international markets. Its long-term impact, however, will depend on production levels, gold supply and the refinery’s ability to attract business.

Could this be a model for other African countries seeking to move beyond exporting raw minerals?
