Nigerian scientist Dr. Samuel Achilefu helped develop infrared “cancer goggles” that allow surgeons to detect tumor tissue during surgery.
The technology uses a fluorescent imaging agent that attaches to or accumulates in cancerous tissue. Under near-infrared light, the tagged tissue produces a signal that the goggles detect and display in the surgeon’s field of view. This can help surgeons distinguish suspected tumor tissue from surrounding healthy tissue in real time.
Early research explored their use in breast-cancer surgery, melanoma surgery, tumor-margin assessment, and sentinel lymph-node mapping.
Dr. Achilefu’s work shows how science and technology can help surgeons make cancer surgery more precise.
