"It was a Friday evening, and a dad was doing the most ordinary thing in the world: taking three of his kids to get donuts.
They were pulling away from the shop in northeast Philadelphia when the sky came apart. A medical transport jet had crashed nearby, and in an instant the street was fire, smoke, and debris flying in every direction like shrapnel.
In the back seat, ten-year-old Trey Howard didn't freeze.
He grabbed his little sister and pushed her down, covering her with his own body. "Get down, baby girl," he told her. A split second later, the car's windows shattered, and a piece of metal from the plane struck Trey in the head.
His father turned around to see his son with debris lodged in his skull. He used his own socks, and a shirt handed over by a stranger on the street, to try to stop the bleeding until a police officer rushed them to the hospital.
Trey needed emergency brain surgery. Doctors warned the family he might not survive.
He did.
And when he woke up, his very first concern wasn't himself. He asked his dad two things. Had he missed the Super Bowl. And then, quietly: "Daddy, did I save my sister?"
He had. She was safe, because a ten-year-old chose to shield her without a moment's hesitation.
His dad told him he wasn't a celebrity. He was a superhero 🖤"
