Before James West's breakthrough, microphones were often larger, more expensive, and less practical for everyday electronics.

Working with Gerhard Sessler at Bell Laboratories, West co-created the electret microphone, a design that allowed high-quality sound recording in a much smaller and more affordable package.

This innovation helped make possible the compact microphones found in billions of devices around the world.
James West's contribution is a perfect example of how one invention can quietly become part of everyday life.
