What do pacemakers, computers, smartphones, TVs and radios have in common?

Otis Boykin helped improve the electronic technology that makes them work. Boykin developed improved electrical resistors—small components that help control electricity inside electronic devices. His resistor technology was used by IBM in computers and by the U.S. military in guided-missile systems.

But perhaps his most important contribution was to pacemakers.

In 1964, Boykin developed a control unit for pacemakers that allowed the electrical pulses delivered to the heart to be regulated more precisely. His work helped make pacemakers more reliable, longer-lasting and less expensive to manufacture.

He helped improve the technology that made these lifesaving devices more practical and accessible.

And over the course of his career, Boykin earned more than 25 U.S. patents.

Did you know Otis Boykin helped advance pacemaker technology?
