Four of Africa's leading cocoa-producing nations, Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon, are set to launch a landmark alliance aimed at ending decades of exporting raw cocoa beans and increasing local value addition across the continent.
The initiative, expected to be formally launched during a summit in Abuja, seeks to encourage the processing of cocoa within Africa rather than exporting raw beans for foreign manufacturers to turn into finished products. Leaders believe the move will help create jobs, boost industrialization, increase export earnings and give African producers greater influence over global cocoa prices.
Collectively, the four countries account for the vast majority of the world's cocoa production. By coordinating policies and negotiating with international buyers as a unified bloc, they hope to strengthen their bargaining power and ensure farmers receive better returns for their produce.
The proposed alliance builds on earlier cooperation between Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, which introduced measures such as the Living Income Differential to improve farmers' incomes. Bringing Nigeria and Cameroon into the partnership would further strengthen Africa's position in the global cocoa market.
