The Inventor Behind “The Real McCoy”

In 1872, Elijah McCoy patented an automatic engine lubricator that used steam pressure to deliver oil to moving parts while an engine was running. Before this, steam engines often had to stop so their moving parts could be lubricated. McCoy’s invention helped save time and keep locomotives and other heavy machinery operating.

His lubricator became so well regarded that historians believe it helped inspire the expression “the real McCoy”—a phrase still used today to describe something genuine or authentic.

And McCoy didn't stop there. By the time of his death in 1929, he held 57 U.S. patents, primarily involving railroad technology, lubrication and mechanical improvements.

The impact of his work was significant enough that the USPTO named its Detroit regional office the Elijah J. McCoy Midwest Regional Patent Office in his honor.
