Burkina Faso plans to stop describing European “explorers” in its history lessons with language that sanitizes invasion. The planned change calls them what they were: invaders.

These invaders terrorized nations: they seized land, robbed communities, and used rape, murder, and organized violence to impose colonial rule. Those who carried out that terror were terrorists—not harmless “explorers.” Naming them as invaders makes clear who entered by force and who suffered the violence.

Burkina Faso’s announced revision is a challenge to the language used to teach colonialism—and to whose experience history books treat as central. The new materials will show how the policy is put into practice.
