Lewis H. Latimer (1848–1928), helped make electric lighting more practical to produce and bring into everyday life.

When people think about the light bulb, they may not think about the filament inside it. But that small component is essential to a traditional incandescent bulb: when electricity heats the filament, it glows and produces light.

Latimer helped improve the manufacturing process for carbon filaments, an important part of making incandescent lighting more practical.

In 1882, Latimer received U.S. Patent No. 252,386 for a process to manufacture carbon filaments used in electric lamps.

His contribution helped advance electric lighting during a time when inventors and engineers were working to make it more reliable and accessible.

And his accomplishments didn't stop there. Earlier in his career, Latimer prepared the patent drawings for Alexander Graham Bell's telephone patent application, making his mark on another transformative technology.

The next time you turn on a light, remember that major innovations often depend on the components and improvements we rarely notice.
