In this video, we share the incredible story of Joseph Nguthiru, a Kenyan climate-tech engineer and founder of HyaPak EcoTech. While stuck on a boat for five hours during a university class trip, Joseph witnessed firsthand how the invasive water hyacinth suffocates East Africa's waterways—blocking navigation, killing fish, and destroying local fishing livelihoods.
Instead of seeing just an environmental nightmare, Joseph saw a solution. Realizing the weed is packed with natural cellulose, he engineered a way to harvest it, extract the fibers, and turn it into a biodegradable packaging film. It looks like plastic, feels like plastic, and performs like plastic—but it decomposes naturally in the soil, leaving zero waste behind.
By using one massive environmental problem to solve another, HyaPak is clearing hectares of choked lakes, creating green jobs for local harvesting families, and providing sustainable alternatives like nutrient-rich seedling bags and courier mailers. Joseph’s brilliant work earned him global recognition as a United Nations Young Champion of the Earth.
