Before Frederick McKinley Jones, transporting perishable food over long distances was much more difficult because refrigeration relied heavily on ice and salt. Jones developed a successful mobile refrigeration system that could be mounted on transportation vehicles, allowing food and other perishables to stay cold during long-distance transport.

His invention helped transform how America—and eventually the world—moved perishable goods. His refrigeration technology was used in trucks, railroad cars, ships and aircraft, making it possible to transport food much farther without it spoiling. During World War II, his refrigeration technology was also used to help transport food, blood and medicines.

Jones was awarded more than 60 patents throughout his career. In 1991, he was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Technology. His mobile refrigeration patent, U.S. Patent No. 2,303,857, was granted in 1942

Think about that the next time you see a refrigerated truck carrying food across the country. A lot of the food we take for granted today couldn't travel the way it does without innovations like his.

George Washington Murray was a farmer, teacher, inventor and U.S. congressman who earned nine U.S. patents—eight of them for agricultural machinery in 1894.

His inventions helped farmers plant, fertilize, harvest and distribute crops more efficiently.

That same year, Murray read a list of 92 inventions patented by African Americans into the Congressional Record. Compiled by patent examiner Henry E. Baker, the list became an important record of Black innovation.

Murray’s name was on it, too!
