"He asked strangers for 15,000 dollars. They sent him a quarter of a million.
It was half past three in the morning on 22 April 2018 when a man with a rifle opened fire outside a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee. James Shaw Jr was sitting at the counter with a friend. He dropped to the floor and slid toward the bathroom, watching.
Four people were already dead. When the shooting paused for a reload, Shaw ran at him. He took hold of the barrel with his bare hands, wrestled the rifle away and threw it behind the counter, then pushed the gunman out the door. The barrel was still hot. He came out of it with burns on his hand and a bullet graze on his elbow.
He was 29 and had a four-year-old daughter. He told the New York Times he had not been trying to be brave. He had just wanted to live, and the man with the rifle seemed astonished that he did.
That same day he set up a fundraiser for the families of Akilah DaSilva, DeEbony Groves, Joe Perez and Taurean Sanderlin. He asked for 15,000 dollars. He collected 241,826, and handed all of it over at a private ceremony three weeks later.
