Crispus Attucks – The First Martyr of American Independence

Crispus Attucks (c. 1723–1770) is remembered as the first person killed in the struggle that led to the American Revolution. A man of African and Native American ancestry, Attucks died during the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770, becoming a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the fight for freedom.
Born into slavery in Massachusetts, Attucks is believed to have escaped bondage and spent much of his life as a sailor and dockworker. Like many Black men of his era, he lived in a society that denied him basic rights and freedoms, yet he refused to accept oppression.
