Did You Know Haitians Were Part of the Tuskegee Story?
The history of the Tuskegee Airmen extended beyond the United States. During World War II, Haitian aviators traveled to segregated Alabama to train alongside the pioneering Black military pilots of the Tuskegee program.
The five Haitian pilots confirmed as graduates were:
• Raymond Cassagnol
• Alix Pasquet
• Ludovic Audant
• Nicolas Pelissier
• Eberle Guilbaud
A sixth Haitian aviator, Philippe Célestin, also traveled to Tuskegee for training, although researchers have not confirmed that he completed the advanced flight program.
After earning their wings, the Haitian pilots returned home and contributed their aviation skills to Haiti’s developing air corps. Some conducted coastal patrols during the war, while others helped train the next generation of Haitian pilots.
Their experiences also exposed an important contradiction: these men came to the United States to help defend democracy abroad while being forced to endure Jim Crow segregation in America.
The Haitian Tuskegee Airmen remind us that the struggle against fascism—and the fight against racial discrimination—connected Black people throughout the African diaspora.
Their names deserve to be remembered.
