I Left Money in China Because I Knew This Was My Calling

Marreese “Mo Buckets” Speights explains why he made one of the biggest decisions of his basketball life — walking away from money in China to follow what he believed was his calling.

Mo says he left China three months early, leaving a lot of money behind, because he couldn’t stop thinking about coming home and starting his own academy. He wanted to pour into young players and help create real opportunities for the next generation.

The decision paid off in a different way: in just two years, his academy produced 14 Division I players.

Sometimes purpose costs you something up front — but the impact can be much bigger than the paycheck.
