Langston University—Langston, Oklahoma: A Community Built a Future
Before Oklahoma became a state, Black settlers worked to establish a university so their children could pursue higher education. Their efforts helped create Langston University, founded on March 12, 1897, as the Colored Agricultural and Normal University. Its origins combined a land-grant mission with a community’s determination to expand opportunity. Langston University
The institution’s establishment came with a demanding condition: local citizens had to purchase the land. Black residents organized picnics, auctions, and bake sales to raise funds. Within a year, they secured the property—turning their commitment to education into a foundation for future generations to build upon. Langston University
On September 3, 1898, the school opened in a Presbyterian church with 41 students and four faculty members. Its first president, Dr. Inman E. Page, led its early expansion. During his administration, enrollment grew to about 650 students, buildings and dormitories were constructed, and the curriculum was strengthened. Langston University
Both the town and the university were named for John Mercer Langston, a Black attorney, educator, and congressman. His work included organizing Howard University’s law department. The name linked the Oklahoma institution to a broader tradition of Black leadership in education and public life. Langston University
The school’s original mission included preparing teachers, providing agricultural and mechanical instruction, and teaching the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. These goals combined practical skills with preparation for civic participation. Langston University
In 1941, the institution officially became Langston University, reflecting its expanding educational mission. Its history remains rooted in the Black community that worked to make the school possible. Langston University
Descendants of the Taken Ones—Langston’s story honors families who invested in a future they wanted their children to inherit. Their fundraising, land purchase, and determination helped turn a church classroom into a lasting institution of higher learning. Thank you for your time. To support the channel.
