A.G. Gaston
Arthur George “A.G.” Gaston was one of the most successful Black businessmen in American history. Born in 1892 in Demopolis, Alabama, he rose from poverty to build a business empire in Birmingham at a time when Jim Crow segregation tried to limit every part of Black life.
Gaston began working in coal mines, but he noticed something important: Black workers needed services that white-owned businesses often refused to provide with dignity. He started small, selling lunches to miners and saving his money. From there, he built businesses that served Black communities directly.

Gaston believed Black economic power was a form of survival. His businesses created jobs, provided financial services, trained workers, and gave Black families access to insurance, banking, burial services, and lodging when segregation denied them fair treatment.
During the Civil Rights Movement, A.G. Gaston’s Motel in Birmingham became a key headquarters for leaders in the city. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other organizers used the motel during the 1963 Birmingham campaign. Even though Gaston was considered cautious and business-minded, his property became part of the infrastructure of freedom.
A.G. Gaston’s legacy is not only wealth. His real legacy is that he showed how Black ownership could protect a community, fund opportunity, and support the movement for justice.
