Before Ethiopia entered its modern era, the country endured a long period of political fragmentation known as the Zemene Mesafint—the Era of the Princes. Regional rulers competed for territory and influence while emperors often held little effective power.
From that divided world arose Kassa Hailu, the man who would become Emperor Tewodros II, a ruler determined to unite Ethiopia. He challenged division, resisted weakness, pursued reform, and defended Ethiopian sovereignty. Though his reign ended at Magdala, his vision of unity shaped the future of the Ethiopian state.
