In this breakdown, we examine the case of James Crosby, a 49-year-old man from Binghamton, New York, who thought he was safe behind a screen when he posted a violent, racist threat targeting a sitting Black state senator, New York State Senator Lea Webb.

We examine how law enforcement treated the threat not just as a comment, but as a serious felony hate crime, leading to an arrest, a jail cell without bail, and a stark realization that anonymity is an illusion. When the consequences hit, the apologies followed—claiming it "wasn't racial" and meant for "a criminal".
