Queen City: The Black Neighborhood the Pentagon Erased
Queen City was once a vibrant African American neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia — complete with its own fire department and filled with descendants of Freedman’s Village.
It wasn’t poverty or crime that ended this town.
It was “progress.”
In 1941, construction on the Pentagon displaced the entire Queen City community. A happy, educated, self-sustained Black neighborhood — erased for parking lots.
🕯️ They say it wasn’t razed for the Pentagon itself... but for the cars that would drive to it.
