Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have no coastline. Every ton they trade with the rest of the world crosses someone else's territory first.

This October, Togo -- a coastal neighbor outside their alliance -- sat down with all three Alliance of Sahel States nations to build a shared preferential customs tariff between its Port of Lome and their Sahelian hinterland. We walk through the real timeline: a year of preparatory work, a port-promotion tour through three capitals, a customs-experts meeting, and a Directors General summit opened by Burkina Faso's Prime Minister calling to move past planning and into action.

No tariff rate and no start date has been published yet -- we tell you exactly what is confirmed and what is still ahead.
