The Mighty Sparrow, born Dr. Slinger Francisco, died on September 27 at age 91, closing a career that ran nearly eight decades and eight Trinidad Calypso Monarch titles.

Born in Grenada, raised in Trinidad from early childhood, he became the artist the world came to call the Calypso King, carrying Caribbean music, humor, and social commentary to audiences far beyond the islands long before any formal tourism campaign did the same job. The University of the West Indies gave him an honorary doctorate in 1987. Trinidad and Tobago gave him a state-assisted funeral in 2026.
