Why Negro Classification Evidence Should Not Be Renamed

This documentary examines how slavery, emancipation, and post-war governance were
recorded in U.S. law — and why the original legal classification matters as evidence.

This is not a discussion of modern identity.
It is an examination of historical records.

U.S. census data, court documents, sale notices, and federal records consistently used
the classification “Negro” to document slavery and its aftermath.

Later terms describe culture or self-identification, but they do not replace the
original legal record under which the harm occurred.

Part 2 focuses on:
• legal classification versus legal status
• why “Freedmen” described condition, not population identity
• how evidence functions in law
• why replacing original terms without an evidentiary bridge weakens the historical record
