Aunt Viv said "Wear the T-Shirt but learn the history" | Juneteenth With Me |
"You can wear the T-shirt, but until you learn ALL aspects.."
Once again, the black community is divided on Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday. On one side, people feel this is a great step forward as it shows we are finally being recognized from the Black Lives Matter events. On the other hand, many feel 1. No one asked for this 2. This gesture was an insult to our intelligence 3. This once again ignores the larger issue
I was watching an episode of Fresh Prince the other night, where Will was determined to save African Studies in his school. That episode expressed plenty of ideologies relating to the recent announcement of the "United States Senate unanimously passing a bipartisan bill to make Juneteenth a national holiday" (Lindsey).
Aunt Viv became a professor of African Studies to lead the curriculum, but came off as someone who was taking the subject "too seriously." Towards the end, Will believes he truly cares for the subject of our people, but Aunt Viv questions his belief because of his lack of intrinsic motivation to learn ALL aspects of black history.
This mindset is what has plagued American history, especially in the black community. We've made plenty of progress, but not enough.
