Indigenous Australians and the African origin of humanity:
Indigenous Australians
Ancient Journey. Deep Country. Living Culture.
The ancestors of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were part of the early human journeys that began in Africa and spread across the world. After moving through Asia and into ancient Sahul — the Ice Age landmass that included Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea — First Peoples established deep relationships with land, water, sky, law, language, ceremony, and community.
Archaeological evidence shows Aboriginal people have occupied mainland Australia for at least 65,000 years, making them among the world’s oldest continuing cultures. Their cultures did not simply “survive” in isolation; they developed complex knowledge systems, trade networks, art, astronomy, ecological management, oral histories, and spiritual relationships with Country.
It is important to say this with respect: Indigenous Australians are not “Africans in Australia” in a modern ethnic sense. Like all non-African peoples, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples trace their deepest human ancestry to ancient Africa, but over tens of thousands of years, they became distinct First Peoples of Australia, with identities, nations, languages, and cultures unique to the continent.
Long before modern nations, borders, and written maps, humanity began its journey in Africa. From that ancient origin, early people moved across lands, waters, and coastlines, carrying memory, skill, family, and survival knowledge into new worlds.
Among the most ancient of these journeys was the movement of the ancestors of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples into Sahul — the ancient landmass that joined Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. Over thousands of generations, they became the First Peoples of Australia.
They did not enter an empty story. They built one of the deepest continuous cultural histories on Earth. Their knowledge was written in songlines, ceremony, rock art, kinship, language, fire management, navigation, astronomy, and a sacred relationship with Country.
Their story reminds us that human history is older than empire and deeper than written records. It begins in Africa, but it does not end there. It travels, adapts, becomes rooted, and gives rise to peoples whose identities are their own.
From ancient African origins to deep time in Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples carry one of humanity’s oldest continuing cultural legacies — rooted in Country, language, ceremony, and memory.
In Closing
From the first human journey to the oldest living cultures, their story is deep time, sacred land, and living memory.
